Over the coming weeks, I will be profiling possible candidates for the next Secretary General. António Guterres is the current Secretary-General of the United Nations and is in his second term as the ninth Secretary-General (2017- 2026). He is the first former Head of State to be UN Secretary-General which may have an impact on who might be considered as future candidates. The decision-making process is that the UN Secretary-General is appointed by the UN General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
